“Is it all right if I join you?”

Aaron’s deep voice rolled over me and I grinned as I tipped my head back and watched him poke his head out of the door, obviously testing my mood before he made himself at home beside me on another lounger.

“Come on,” I chuckled and gestured to the chair on my right.

I watched as Aaron lumbered over and gracefully sprawled out next to me. It still amazed me that he could move like that for one so large. Aaron was eight years my senior, six foot six, and built with muscles on top of muscles. I had never seen a stronger shifter, yet he wore it with poise uncommon for one of his stature.

I smirked as I let my head roll to the side so I could meet his gaze. Like me, Aaron had green eyes, but his were a much deeper shade than mine. Almost like a rich moss or a startling evergreen. I watched as he raked a hand through his chestnut hair, the natural auburn highlights shining against the deck lights illuminating the space.

When Aaron remained silent, I couldn’t help but laugh.

“It’s your house, you know?” I played. “You don’t have to ask me if you can sit on your own deck.”

“Hmmm,” he hummed and tilted his head back to stare at the stars. Aaron crossed his ankles and then folded his arms over his broad chest. He settled himself a little further down on the lounger. Chicca watched Aaron’s movements, but he remained snuggled up against me, much to my delight.

“Did Joshua and Winick put you up to coming out here to check on me?”

“No,” Aaron chuckled. Finally, he turned his head toward me and gave me one of his lazy smiles. “But dinner will be ready in ten minutes or so. Thought I’d see how you were coming along before we all sat down to eat.”

I grunted, having nothing good to say about what had sent me into such a fit inside.

“Wanna talk about it?” Aaron asked in that soft, deep, and patient voice of his.

I knew he wouldn’t pressure me to speak, nor would he give me any grief if I chose not to open up. Even after just three weeks together, I’d already learned that Aaron wasn’t the kind of person who would coerce or browbeat another into something they weren’t ready for or comfortable with. He was content to let others tackle life at their own pace and discover things in their own time. Yet, I also knew he’d sit beside me all night if I wanted to talk that long.

My grandfather had definitely made the right decision when he placed us with the Jacobson family. My wolf and I were already feeling more settled in our new environment than we had in quite a while. And because of that air of familiarity and the safety I felt with the Jacobsons, I decided to open up to my newest friend and let someone else help me gain some much-needed perspective.
